This morning Year 6 were very lucky to have the opportunity to meet and train with Andy Turner who is a Great British Olympian and Commonwealth athlete. Following an exciting assembly where he talked about his athletics career, showed videos of his achievements and showed us his medals we had a sprint session. During the assembly Andy told us about how he had trained with and had a BBQ at Usain Bolt’s house in Jamaica and also had sparring sessions with KSI (A famous Youtuber for anyone who doesn’t know him) at his boxing gym.
First we were given the opportunity to get a closer look at, and touch, Andy’s medals. They were all very different but clearly very well deserved.
After that we warmed up by completing some stretching exercises to ensure we didn’t damage our muscles. Finally Andy taught us how to sprint, including how to do a sprint start. When we had had lots of practice we then competed in some sprint and relay races.
Andy gave us a really important message this morning. He told us he wasn’t the most talented athlete but gave a key message of:
‘Dream big and anything is possible!’
