Welcome to Year 1!
The most important rule in Year 1 is to always try our best! Mrs Brady, Mrs Cook and Mrs Ryan support us in year 1 to grow our independence, make good choices and understand that making mistakes is just a part of our learning. In our classroom, we promote kindness, tolerance and respect to all.
To ensure we are receiving a profound primary experience, we learn about engaging topics such as Around the World, Our Capital City, including The Great Fire of London and Marvellous Mixtures. These include exciting visits to Greasbrough Park and Eureka or York Chocolate Story!
Transitioning from Reception to Year 1 can be a little tricky, as we begin more formal teaching and less provision based learning through play. To make this transition as smooth as possible, we have our very own special area for our enhanced provision. This area allows us to practise the skills and concepts from our lessons in a more practical and hands-on way, as well as giving us a much needed ‘brain break’!
Year 1 is a very important year for learning to read. We follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised phonics programme to grow confident readers who enjoy Reading for pleasure. At the end of the year, we undertake the Phonics Screening Check to assess our ability to decode words using our phonics knowledge. Therefore, reading at home each night will be very beneficial for us!
