On Wednesday, three of our most talented artists from Y6 were given the opportunity to attend an exciting meeting at Redscope School. This meeting was the first step in a collaboration between several local schools, the Children’s Capital of Culture team and sculptor Jason Turpin-Thomson. Jason explained he had been commissioned to design and produce a sculpture which will celebrate everything wonderful about our local area, while also incorporating memorial aspects in honour of former Winterhill Headteacher, Steve Rhodes, who sadly passed away earlier this year.
The children were shown examples of Jason’s work, then put into groups with other pupils from across the Greasbrough and Kimberworth areas and asked to brainstorm ideas and doodle artwork which they associate with our local area. Jason visited each group in turn to show them his planning sketchbook and the processes he goes through when designing, which really helped spark their creativity!
Our Greasbrough representatives behaved impeccably and fully engaged in the task, contributing some amazing ideas about what they love and are proud of in our local area. Jason will be visiting each school in turn in the near future to share some of his metal working techniques and keep us updated on the design of the sculpture, which will eventually be installed in a prominent position in our area for everyone to enjoy.
