In Year 1BC, we have been learning about an artist called Susan D Martin. Susan D. Martin is a textiles designer specalising in Natural Dying. She uses plants from her garden and the local woodland. She uses a technique called Tataki Zome (leaf pounding) where plants and flowers are printed onto different fabrics. She forages leaves and flowers, hammers them onto fabric to transfer pigment and texture.
Yesterday, Mrs Brady set us the challenge to be inspired by nature as Susan D. Martin was. On our walk home we picked a variety of wild flowers to use for our prints.
This afternoon, we used these to create our own fabric print inspired by this artist’s style. First, we gently placed our leaves and flowers onto our fabric. Once we were happy with the placement of the leaves and flowers, we folded the fabric over to cover them. Next, we gently hammered the fabric where the leaves and flowers were to release the pigment. Finally, we opened the fabric to reveal our fantastic patterns.
Look at the amazing results!
